March in Tacoma 2021

March is here and it's almost springtime in Tacoma. We've found a few events this month both virtual and in person to celebrate such an occasion! Grab some mead at a new-ish metal bar, learn about the wildlife of the Pacific Northwest at the latest History After Hours, explore the possibilities of working in a Tacoma trade, shop local and Vintage in Tacoma's historic Lincoln District, grab a pint (or 16) across the bridge with our Gig Harbor friends, or get your garden going with Food is Free Tacoma. We're so happy to see our sweet city continually blooming with events for the community and hope to see you out there!

March 3rd

Women in Trades Event

Tacoma Public Utilities is hosting a forum for women interested in a career path in trades for the City of Tacoma. Hear from women currently working in Tacoma’s Water, Power, Environmental Services, Public Works, and more. This is a great opportunity to learn more about these careers and the recruitment process. You'll also be able to glean advice from current female Tacoma City employees. This event is online and lasts from 3:30pm – 7pm. Check it out and learn how a career in trades may be the best fit for you!

March 4th

History After Hours: Living Washington

Virtually join The Washington State History Museum for the first History After Hours of the 2021 series! This first event is focused on the wildlife around Washington. From furry friends to funky fungi, come hear about the history of Washington’s nature and how it connects us all. As per usual, this will not only be informative, but interactive! Take-home kits will be announced soon, so keep an eye out for updates. In the meantime, register online to reserve your kit and a space on Zoom!

Kvlt Mead

Tacoma’s first meadery and taproom have moved to South Tacoma Way! Kvlt Mead is a hand crafted meadery using premium and local ingredients including PNW Clover Honey, PNW sourced fruits, and Cascadian glacial waters. From the original flavors of traditional clover honey mead, to smooth cherry chocolate mead, to bright ginger, lemon, star anise, sparkling mead, with six rotating taps, you'll surely find something to wet your whistle. Their best secret ingredient though? Metal. Owner’s Brian and Jen are heavy consumers of metal music and use their taproom as a way to celebrate their love of metal and the culture surrounding it. You’ll see and hear local PNW metal bands while at the meadery, as these Tacoma loving owners are all about supporting local. March 6th & 7th

Lincoln District Vintage Walk

Two days of vintage shopping, food, music and more are coming to the Lincoln District and you’re invited! Come walk the historical Lincoln District and see what fares local vendors like Throwbacks NW, Practical Vintage, Lucky Lemmons, and more have to offer. From antique chairs to 90’s T-shirts with flare, there is something for everyone! When you’re in need of a snack, hop in for some dine-in and take-out services from one of the 12 participating restaurants including Shovel & Stone Coffee, Jubilee Burgers, Jan Parker Cookery, or the ever famous Vien Dong. And when you’re not jamming to the live tunes, be sure to take moment and drop off non-perishable food and toiletry items for Lincoln High School’s Resource Center. Come check out what this fantastic part of the Tacoma community has to offer!

March 13th

St. Paddy’s Day Run Tacoma

Could it be? An in-person running event!? Tacoma City Marathon Events is tickled green to be hosting the 12th Annual, St. Paddy’s Day 5K! Under the guidelines of Washington State Roadmap to Recovery, this lucky event will take place with numerous staggered start times, between 8am – 10:45am. Each time slot will allow for 50 people to race together, with a cap of 600 racers total. Your event kit will include a finishers medal, coffee mug, and chip timed results. Sign up soon as space is limited! In the event that the run does have to go virtual (hopefully not!), you will still be able to pick up your sweet race day swag at Fleet Feet Tacoma.

Food is Free Project Tacoma

Spring really is JUST around the corner now. For some people, that means it’s time to get their gardens going, and Food is Free Project Tacoma is ready and happy to help! Food is Free Project Tacoma is a non-profit food-sharing organization that advocates for front yard gardens and sharing among neighbors. Their mission is to “grow community and food while helping gain independence from a broken agricultural system." They do this by growing food that is then given away free, building gardens for Pierce County residents so they can grow their own fresh produce to keep and share, and teaming up with other local organizations to grow, share, and learn together. But seriously, they will come to your house and build a garden bed and your funds will go to support their ongoing projects! One of those projects being:

Farm to Family Food Box Giveaway

Every Monday in March, families can drive up and receive a box of healthy produce and proteins. This is a free public event, available to anyone in need. Simply drive to Calvary Baptist Church in South Tacoma between 12pm and 4pm (the earlier the better as it is only while supplies last), be sure to have a completely cleared trunk (they will not load into passenger areas), and volunteers will load you up and send you on your way. Masks are required and they ask that you enter on C Street southbound from 64th and not block the neighbor’s driveways.

March 20th

Free Workshop: Yard Waste Composting

Speaking of gardens! Tacoma Environmental Services along with Tacoma Sustainability have some pointers to offer about at-home composting for yard and garden waste. Learn how to feed your compost a balanced diet, trouble-shoot for pests and odor, and decide which compost bins are best for your needs. In turn, you’ll receive some of the best quality fertilizer for indoor and out door plants! Register via Zoom for this hour and a half class and get your garden growing strong.

Tide’s Tavern Canmaster 2021

We’re showing some love to our neighbors north of us and adding this sweet Gig Harbor event to this months blog.

Tides Tavern is hosting their 18th Canmaster (formerly Tapmaster) event, where they invite you to try out 16 local beers over 31 days! Grab your punch card and either sit down for a pint (or two!) or take a can to-go. This year’s Canmaster list is featuring some tasty brews from a few of our favorite breweries including Gerogetown, Silver City, Narrows, Wet Coast, and a whole lot more! Complete your card by the end of March and you will win a free shirt commemorating the event as well as your name on the “Wall of Fame” at Tide’s Tavern.
