October certainly got here fast! Perhaps it's this odd time-warp we seem to be living in. Don't worry though, we've found a few ways to slow time down this month and enjoy our beautiful city. local take-out while supporting homeless pets, get the kids out for some safe trick-or-treating, and maybe even grab yourself a treat from a couple new spots on 6th Ave. We're so fortunate to live in a thriving city that supports each other through business, art, and of course food.
Take-out Thursday: Incline Cider House & Duty’s Hideaway
Take-Out Thursday is an opportunity to support local restaurants while giving a better life to the homeless animals in Tacoma and Pierce County! Simply order carry-out from the Thursday feature restaurant and a portion of the proceeds are given to the Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County. Incline Cider House is a local family-owned and operated cider house located in Downtown Tacoma’s Brewery Blocks. They offer a selection of individual crowlers (We recommend the Prickly Pear!), bottles, mixed 6 packs, snack packs, beer and wine. From 2pm – 8pm 10% of all proceeds from carryout orders will be donated and from 5pm – 8pm you will be able to enter the “Choose Your Car Raffle” hosted by Larson Automotive Group! Order online or in the taproom.
Dusty’s Hideaway is a South Tacoma treat with awesome southwest vibes! We love hanging in the "backyard" with a tasty slushy cocktail and delicious Sam Elliot sandwich. Vegan or vegetarian? They have you covered. We suggest the vegan burger and fried buffalo cauliflower (Seriously though, we aren't vegan and get them every time because they are THAT good!). 20% of all proceeds from carry-out order from 11am - 12pm will benefit the humane society. With new hours and a few adjustments, you can now explore the Washington State History Museum again! Our beloved museum is now open Tuesday through Sunday from 10am – 5pm, with a special Senior time on Tuesday from 10am – Noon. Enjoy half-priced admission through October 23rd as only a portion of the museum will be open. Come check out the Great Hall of Washington along with a special pop-up exhibition Northwest Collage Society’s Suffrage Celebration Show. Masks will be required and a one-way path will be marked throughout the galleries. On October 24th, come explore the new installations, Votes for Women: 100 Years and Counting and Columbia and Cascade: A River and a Range . We are THRILLED to see this lovely piece of Tacoma running again and look forward to when History After Hours start up again!
October 16th
Sadly, this year’s traditional Truck and Tractor event has been cancelled. But the City of Lakewood didn’t want to let us down! Instead, head down to Fort Steilacoom Park to enjoy some popcorn, a free pumpkin (and decorating kit!), and a drive-in showing of the Academy Award winning film CoCo! Additionally, in leu of the traditional trucks and tractors, fire trucks and police vehicles will be at the event for kids and adults to view! All tickets must be purchased in advance as space is limited and there are a few rules to follow regarding parking and Covid safety. This is such a sweet way to get the family out, while staying cozy as fall sets in. If you get into town early, make sure to stop in at the Lakewood Farmers Market taking pace in the park from 2:30 to 6:30. Sounds like a whole evening of fun!
October is a very special month in Tacoma. It's when we embrace, create, and further our understanding of the importance of art. With over 70 virtual events, including story telling, dance performances, art installations, fashion shows, concerts, and radio dramas, it's really too much to put in a tiny blog blurb. Perhaps the biggest take away from this will be watching and participating in the Tacoma Community engaging itself. These events, exhibits, and activities are part of what makes our city beautiful and inspire future Tacoma artists to grow and learn.

October 17th
If you’re like us, you’ve been known to binge a show or two on Netflix. The recent reboot of Queer Eye is certainly no exception! On October 17th, Tacoma Arts Live is hosting a live virtual conversation with Queer Eye Culture Expert, Karamo Brown. While the rest of the Queer Eye guys may be responsible for home, fashion, and beauty make-overs, Karamo reaches deeper to help participants overcome struggles holding them back internally and externally. Come hear from the 2018 Human Right Campaign Visibility Award winner as he draws from his social work background as well as his multiple identities as a black male, openly gay man, son of immigrants, Christian, and father. Following the event will be a moderated Q & A with audience members. Purchase tickets in advance here!
New to 6th Ave
There’s a new libation station on 6th Ave and they are making the best out of these Corona times. Located between Oakes and Anderson, Field Bar & Bottle Shop is ready to serve your wine, beer, cider, and classy cocktail needs. Specializing in natural libations, you’ll find the options are nearly endless. If you fancy yourself a darn good home bartender, you may consider checking out their bitters, vermouth, and aperitif selection. Or, if you prefer just to just pop a bottle (or can) their local beer and wine assortment cover’s a vast array for varietals, hops, and brews. Currently set up as a bottle shop only, you can come peruse the shelves for some take-home treats. When Phase 4 hits though, you’ll be able to cozy up in the shop to enjoy a vino or two. Several of us experienced a bit of mourning when North End Social club closed down earlier this year. But when one door closes on 6th Ave... it typically re-opens with a similar vibe. That's where Off Day Beer & Wine steps in! This "juice" bar for grown-ups offers local beers on tap and in cans, craft wine, and the ever growing in popularity, hard-seltzers. Couple owned, this taproom was born out of a passion for brewing, enjoying, and understanding beer. The owners have carefully crafted their menu and are very open to hearing what YOU would like to see on tap. Seriously! We've had the opportunity to chat with them a few time and they're true beer people with a desire to discover more. So make this a destination when you're out for a brisk fall walk, but be sure to come thirsty. Also, you'll find a few snacks available at the bar top but outside food is welcome!
Trick or Treat!
We understand that this year’s Halloween will be a bit different, especially for our little ones. Trick-or-treating one of those memories that you hold onto as a kiddo and hopefully get to share with your own little ones eventually. So we've found a few opportunities to safely acquire some treats before and on Halloween!
October 9th
Tacoma’s famous Freighthouse Marketplace is hosting a Covid safe market complete with local vendors, food court, and trick-or-treating. Explore the historical Freighthouse Square with your costumed kiddos and grab a treat for yourself along the way. Limited occupancy will be allowed, so be sure to come early or be prepared to wait outside for a short time. As always, mask or some form of face-covering are required as well as 6ft distancing.
October 24th
This spooky drive through event is a great way to snag some sweet treats at a safe distance! Pack up the kids and follow the sinister route of eerie and silly trunk displays through LeMay’s Marymount grounds. Once you’ve made it through the creepy crawlies, each costumed kiddo will receive a goody bag full of confectionary treasures. Even the first 250 drivers will receive a swag bag of their own! While the event is free, it’s suggested to reserve a time and spot in line to ensure there are enough treats to go around.
Businesses all along the Lincoln International Business District are ready with 6ft poles and bundles of candy to help make this 2020 Halloween a little sweeter. Get the kid’s dressed up in their finest Paw Patrol, Bat Girl, or Power Ranger get-ups and head down to the Lincoln District any time between 12pm and 5pm for some proper trick-or-treating. Keep an eye on the event page for a list of participating businesses as it is growing daily. Masks and social distancing are required.
