April in Tacoma

Looking for what to do in Tacoma this month? We've got you covered!

Spring is finally here and we have found ten fun things to check out around town. This April you can get your garden going with some local plants, watch the sunny daffodil covered floats travel around the South Sound, learn how the McMenamins Elks Temple came to be, shop for some vintage treasures, enjoy a juicy burger on the Ave, tour South Tacoma Way as it gears up for big changes, or dance, bounce, and play your way into spring. This month is sure to be a fun one and we can't wait to get out there!

April 6th

Caribbean Queens Festival

This event is all about celebrating the music, food, artistry, and culture of the Caribbean. Edison Square will be full of dancing, drumming, tasty treats, and handmade treasures to enjoy. The celebration is family friendly and free, so the whole gang can enjoy an afternoon of island rhythm.

The Daffodil Festival, Time to Shine

Spring has sprung and it is time for one of the South Sound's longest running traditions, the Daffodil Parade! Celebrate the beginning of this blooming season, and watch the beautiful daffodil inspired floats, costumes, and art, as it travels through Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner, and Orting. Tacoma’s portion will begin at 10:15 a.m. running from South 12th to South 21st along Pacific Ave.

BONUS: Check out the Tacoma Yacht Club Marine Parade on April 14th and the adorable Junior Daffodil Parade also on April 20th in Tacoma’s Proctor District.

This free and family friendly event takes place along UW Tacoma’s Prairie line Trail and in Tollefson Plaza. Featuring over 100 vendors, artists, and culinary creators, along with activities for young and old, this is sure to be a fun time! There will be a chance to swap plant starts and gently used craft supplies, explore the science of electrification, and kiddos can collect stamps from each booth to fill their scavenger hunt Expo Passport. A local vegan food truck and coffee truck will be serving treats all day as well!

South Tacoma Way Neighborhood Walking Tour

South Tacoma Way is going through a transformation and Pretty Gritty Tours would like to walk you through it. Come take a stroll with other members of the South Tacoma community and hear about the Neighborhood Planning Program’s plans for the area. Through collaboration with neighbors at public meetings, in surveys, and at other events, a collection of ideas and strategies will be implemented over two to three years to build up the South Tacoma Way neighborhood (check out this handout for more details).  On the tour you will hear about the history of South Tacoma Way, the plans for the future, and you are encouraged to bring your own stories about the area. So lace up those walking shoes and be a part of the big changes coming to our Gritty City!

Bomb Burger

bomb burger

There’s a new burger in Tacoma and it’s the “bomb!” Located on Tacoma’s busy 6th Ave, this food truck has set up in the former location of Catffeinated. We took a walk to visit them recently and left VERY satisfied. The fries were phenomenal and the burger was * chef’s kiss *. If you like it hot, give the Spicy Burger with jalapenos and pepper jack cheese a try, or if you're more into that smoky flavor, definitely get a side of the hickory sauce. For those who like to go without the bun, say no more, they will turn your meal into a burger bowl. Needless to say, we’ll be visiting them again soon. Show these guys some love next time you’re on the Ave!
