May in Tacoma

May is here and we've found a few things to do around Tacoma. Test your detective skills, race for a cause (twice!), enjoy some fresh cider, check out a live outdoor show, see what's new to eat on 6th Ave, and our favorite, enjoy some local Rainier baseball! The sun is shining and we're ready to get out there.

May 1st - 31st

It’s no secret that Douville Home Group loves the work of Emergency Food Network. What better time to sing their praises than during Hunger Awareness Month! Through the month of May, EFN invites you to participate in the Hunger Walk and 5K. This year the 5k will be virtual and includes weekly themes, local discounts, and swag! Walk or run a 5k (or as many as you want!) while raising funds for the great work for EFN. For every dollar given to EFN, they can provide FIVE meals to local families in need! Last year alone they were able to provide over 14million pounds of food to the over 1.3 million individuals. Get those walking shoes out and sign up today!

Bonus: Grow Your Food – EFN Seed Start Program: EFN's Mother Earth Farm will be distributing seed starts for you to grow your own food. Every Friday through June18th, seed starts will be available at local community gardens and parks.

It’s finally here, opening day for the Tacoma Rainiers! There’s nothing quite like sitting in the ballpark with a hotdog in hand and hearing the sound of a bat cracking another home run across the field. Opening at 25% capacity, Cheney Stadium has worked out all the kinks for opening under Covid guidelines. All ticket sales will start at 10am on the day of each game and will go until their gone. The stadium will also be cashless, bag less, and paperless, so only carry in what you need and you'll receive a digital ticket. All concessions will be operating under the new health guidelines. All the changes aside, we are SO ready for game day!

Enjoy an outdoor concert from the comfort of your car! Tacoma Refugee Choir (TRC) along with other local artists will be taking over LeMay car museum's Haub field. Show up early and enjoy the museum along with food trucks, or get there just in time to jam from within your designated parking spots. TRC is a choir that gathers weekly where all are welcome, singers or not, but more specifically the choir exists to, "support the voices of immigrants and refugees, as well as the children of refugees and immigrants." The choir was formed as a project in partnership with Tacoma Community House, a "nationally-respected, community-based service center for immigrants, refugees, and long-time South Sound residents seeking enrichment and pathways to self-sufficiency." For 110 years, TCH has been helping individuals transition out of poverty, navigate new cultures, and find professional success. Come check out this LIVE show and support our neighbors and their voices!

Are you slightly (or really) competitive and ready for an adventure in your own backyard? Great! Tacoma Pierce County Habitat for Humanity has created an adventure race, just for you! Teams of 3 - 8 people are tasked with completing four challenges in the categories of Physical, Find, Skill, and Fun. This three hour even starts wherever YOU are. That's right. There is no start or finish line, just access to the challenges via a race app. All challenges will be released at 10am and then it's up to you to determine the order and what you need. Simply upload photos of your completed challenges as you go and you're one step closer to the finish line. Registration is $25 per person and includes access to the app and a Habitat for Humanity facemask. Aside from testing your skills and abilities, teams are encouraged to raise $300 to support Habitat's affordable homeownership and foreclosure prevention program. Your registration fees count towards the goal, so you're already almost there! Check out their FAQ page for more information and race day details.
