  • April in Tacoma 2021

Spring is finally here and we've found some ways to get out and about! Jump back into history, shop local, take the kids on a treasure hunt, enjoy some new and old brews, dine out for a cause, or just go for a walk. We're pretty excited for the sun to be out again and look forward to enjoying Tacoma while catching some rays. Dining out for Life Dining out for Life (DOFL) is a long standing partnership between local restaurants and the Pierce County AIDS Foundation (PCAF). In years past, local restaurants would donate 25% - 100% of one day's proceeds to help provide the life saving services of PCAF. This would generate upwards of $50,000 in donations! PCAF is now extending DOFL through the whole month of April, but are doing things a bit differently. While there are still several participating restaurants, DOFL won't be asking for a portion of sales. Knowing that these local restaurants have taken quite the hit this past year, DOFL didn't feel right asking for funds from sales, nor were they comfortable encouraging large gatherings. So they got creative. This year, each restaurant will be contributing to a local Cookbook that will be given to those who donate $100 or more! They will also be offering local cooking classes online! Another change is to the ambassador program. Typically, an ambassador would be present at the participating restaurants on the day of DOFL to explain the program and thank guests for their contributions. This year, DOFL is asking for virtual ambassadors to promote their favorite participating restaurant virtually. Ambassadors will use social media to encourage their friends and family to get take-out or safely dine-in at these restaurants who have been so generous to DOFL in the past. Learn about becoming an ambassador here. April 2nd Washington State History Museum Re-Opening! Another piece of our beautiful city is slowly opening up! Come celebrate the Washington State History Museum’s re-opening by wandering the Great Hall of Washington History and the Washington My Home exhibit. This year’s parade however, will look a bit different. In partnership with WA State Fair and it’s Spring Fair, this parade is going stationary. That’s right. The parade will still be full of beautiful fresh cut daffodil sculptures per it’s 80 year tradition, but instead of moving through the crowd, the crowd will be moving through it! Don’t worry, the bands, clowns, and Daffodil Princesses will still be making an appearance. Grab your tickets today to make some floral memories! March is here and it's almost springtime in Tacoma. We've found a few events this month both virtual and in person to celebrate such an occasion! Grab some mead at a new-ish metal bar, learn about the wildlife of the Pacific Northwest at the latest History After Hours, explore the possibilities of working in a Tacoma trade, shop local and Vintage in Tacoma's historic Lincoln District, grab a pint (or 16) across the bridge with our Gig Harbor friends, or get your garden going with Food is Free Tacoma. We're so happy to see our sweet city continually blooming with events for the community and hope to see you out there! March 3rd Women in Trades Event Tacoma Public Utilities is hosting a forum for women interested in a career path in trades for the City of Tacoma. Hear from women currently working in Tacoma’s Water, Power, Environmental Services, Public Works, and more. This is a great opportunity to learn more about these careers and the recruitment process. You'll also be able to glean advice from current female Tacoma City employees. This event is online and lasts from 3:30pm – 7pm. Check it out and learn how a career in trades may be the best fit for you! March 4th History After Hours: Living Washington Virtually join The Washington State History Museum for the first History After Hours of the 2021 series! This first event is focused on the wildlife around Washington. From furry friends to funky fungi, come hear about the history of Washington’s nature and how it connects us all. As per usual, this will not only be informative, but interactive! Take-home kits will be announced soon, so keep an eye out for updates. In the meantime, register online to reserve your kit and a space on Zoom! Kvlt Mead Tacoma’s first meadery and taproom have moved to South Tacoma Way! Kvlt Mead is a hand crafted meadery using premium and local ingredients including PNW Clover Honey, PNW sourced fruits, and Cascadian glacial waters. From the original flavors of traditional clover honey mead, to smooth cherry chocolate mead, to bright ginger, lemon, star anise, sparkling mead, with six rotating taps, you'll surely find something to wet your whistle. Their best secret ingredient though? Metal. Owner’s Brian and Jen are heavy consumers of metal music and use their taproom as a way to celebrate their love of metal and the culture surrounding it. You’ll see and hear local PNW metal bands while at the meadery, as these Tacoma loving owners are all about supporting local. Order online, to-go, or sit down for a glass of their absolutely metal mead. Sign up soon as space is limited! In the event that the run does have to go virtual (hopefully not!), you will still be able to pick up your sweet race day swag at Fleet Feet Tacoma. Food is Free Project Tacoma Spring really is JUST around the corner now. For some people, that means it’s time to get their gardens going, and Food is Free Project Tacoma is ready and happy to help! Food is Free Project Tacoma is a non-profit food-sharing organization that advocates for front yard gardens and sharing among neighbors. Their mission is to “grow community and food while helping gain independence from a broken agricultural system." They do this by growing food that is then given away free, building gardens for Pierce County residents so they can grow their own fresh produce to keep and share, and teaming up with other local organizations to grow, share, and learn together. But seriously, they will come to your house and build a garden bed and your funds will go to support their ongoing projects! One of those projects being: Farm to Family Food Box Giveaway Every Monday in March, families can drive up and receive a box of healthy produce and proteins. This is a free public event, available to anyone in need. Simply drive to Calvary Baptist Church in South Tacoma between 12pm and 4pm (the earlier the better as it is only while supplies last), be sure to have a completely cleared trunk (they will not load into passenger areas), and volunteers will load you up and send you on your way. Masks are required and they ask that you enter on C Street southbound from 64th and not block the neighbor’s driveways. March 20th Free Workshop: Yard Waste Composting Speaking of gardens! Tacoma Environmental Services along with Tacoma Sustainability have some pointers to offer about at-home composting for yard and garden waste. Learn how to feed your compost a balanced diet, trouble-shoot for pests and odor, and decide which compost bins are best for your needs. In turn, you’ll receive some of the best quality fertilizer for indoor and out door plants! Register via Zoom for this hour and a half class and get your garden growing strong. All Month Long! Tide’s Tavern Canmaster 2021 We’re showing some love to our neighbors north of us and adding this sweet Gig Harbor event to this months blog. Tides Tavern is hosting their 18th Canmaster (formerly Tapmaster) event, where they invite you to try out 16 local beers over 31 days! Grab your punch card and either sit down for a pint (or two!) or take a can to-go. This year’s Canmaster list is featuring some tasty brews from a few of our favorite breweries including Gerogetown, Silver City, Narrows, Wet Coast, and a whole lot more! Complete your card by the end of March and you will win a free shirt commemorating the event as well as your name on the “Wall of Fame” at Tide’s Tavern. This is a great way to try some new craft brews and get out to see the beautiful harbor. Cheers! • December in Tacoma

The holidays are finally here and Tacoma is full of spirit, life, and hope. This month we've found ways to safely spread holiday cheer virtually and in person. Markets, food drives, lighted displays, and local music are still very much alive this year, even if they look a little different. Come "join" us as we drink for a cause, shop for some local art and goods, support our neighbors, and enjoy some magical shows and displays from the warmth of our homes (and vehicles). November 27th - January 3rd Zoo Lights It seems no winter in Pierce County is complete without a stroll through the glittering bulbs of Zoolights. With over 700,000 shimmering LEDs lovingly sculpted to create wonderful seascapes, animal shenanigans, and PNW views, this event is sure to bring some “normalcy” back to this strange year. Tickets are online pre-purchase only, as each ticket will be registered for a time slot to avoid over-crowding. Additionally, a one-way path has been marked and of course masks are required. Food stands will be open throughout the campus, so you’ll still be able to enjoy that hot cocoa! Come safely celebrate 32 shimmering years at PDZA now through January 3rd. December 3rd – January 8th Hoppy Holiday Food Drive Online Facebook Celebration on January 11th! The Hoppy Holiday Food Drive was so much fun last year, we’ve decided to do it again! And this year we’ve invited eight different Tacoma breweries and cideries to join in on the fun! All donations are again going to the amazing Emergency Food Network, where they will be distributed throughout Pierce County to over 80 different pantries and meal sites. Last year alone, EFN served over 1million Pierce County residents! To participate, simply drop off non-perishable food items and hygiene supplies at one of the select breweries OR make a monetary donation towards your favorite brewery's total online. Don't forget to help out your local brewery and grab a drink or two to-go! The brewery with the most donations will receive an epic Hoppy Holiday tap handle trophy! Additionally, for each donation, donors will be entered into a raffle to win some sweet brewery swag. Then, on January 11th, Peaks and Pints will be hosting a Facebook Live party where winners will be announced! Come support your local breweries and help EFN ensure that no person goes hungry this year! Christmas Parades While parades seem like such a thing of the past (as in a year ago), Pierce County just can’t be stopped! A couple of our favorites have gotten a little creative this year... December 12th City of Lakewood’s Reverse Parade of Lights Instead of lining the sidewalks to watch the marching bands and majestic floats make their way down the road, this year the City of Lakewood asks that you do the driving. This reverse parade of lights will take place along Lakewood Towne Center’s perimeter road, where floats, vehicles, and musical entertainment will be parked and set up for you to enjoy from the comfort of your vehicle. This is a safe and socially distance way to stay nice and toasty while you cruise through some spirited displays. If you make it all the way through, you may even catch a glimpse of St. Nick at the end! December 19th Lighted Boat Parade Bundle up and bring a seat because Tacoma Yacht Club’s lighted boat parade is ready to cruise down Ruston Way. Beginning at the Tacoma Yacht Club, dozens of boats from around the Puget Sound will be shining bring with some of the most festive holiday lights and decor. The sailing festivities begin after sunset around 5:30pm and will make their way down to the Foss Waterway concluding around 8pm. While it’s uncertain if and when restaurants along the water will be open, some homemade hot cocoa and a warm blanket are sure to do the trick anywhere along the nearly 6 mile stretch of water front. Tacoma Musical Playhouse Virtual Events Tacoma Musical Playhouse would love to spread some holiday cheer this year! These virtual holiday events will take place on the TMP stage but you'll be able to view them safely and comfortably from your home via Zoom. December 5th Sing-Along with Santa Mrs. Claus and a few helpful elves are ready to strike the harp and lead the chorus in some holiday tunes and would like YOU to join them. Snag a spot online now and get ready to log-in for the cheery sing-along followed by a special reading of “The Night Before Christmas” by the big man himself. Nothing says Christmas 2020 like gathering the kiddos around the laptop with hot cocoa in hand and singing your way into the holiday season! December 11th - 20th Christmas Magic: Music from Broadway If you're more of a listening fan, these performances are sure to at least have you tapping you're foot along. Join cast members old and new as they perform classic holiday hits with all the glamour and glitz of a real Broadway show. Even with several opportunities to join in the Zoom show, grab tickets soon as space is limited. Supporting these live online shows is a great way to keep our local theaters alive this year! Bonus: You can schedule a Virtual Visit with Santa Claus through TMP as well! SHOP LOCAL Winter Farmers Markets Time to take advantage of these dwindling opportunities to shop locally in the open-air. • October in Tacoma

October certainly got here fast! Perhaps it's this odd time-warp we seem to be living in. Don't worry though, we've found a few ways to slow time down this month and enjoy our beautiful city. Check out the month long celebration of Tacoma art, enjoy a final drive-in movie before the rains come, sit in on a virtual chat with an Emmy Award winner, enjoy local take-out while supporting homeless pets, get the kids out for some safe trick-or-treating, and maybe even grab yourself a treat from a couple new spots on 6th Ave. We're so fortunate to live in a thriving city that supports each other through business, art, and of course food. Take-out Thursday: Incline Cider House & Duty’s Hideaway Take-Out Thursday is an opportunity to support local restaurants while giving a better life to the homeless animals in Tacoma and Pierce County! Simply order carry-out from the Thursday feature restaurant and a portion of the proceeds are given to the Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County. Check out these Tacoma locations for October's Take-Out Thursday restaurants: October 1st: Incline Cider House Incline Cider House is a local family-owned and operated cider house located in Downtown Tacoma’s Brewery Blocks. They offer a selection of individual crowlers (We recommend the Prickly Pear!), bottles, mixed 6 packs, snack packs, beer and wine. From 2pm – 8pm 10% of all proceeds from carryout orders will be donated and from 5pm – 8pm you will be able to enter the “Choose Your Car Raffle” hosted by Larson Automotive Group! Order online or in the taproom. October 8th: Dusty’s Hideaway Dusty’s Hideaway is a South Tacoma treat with awesome southwest vibes! We love hanging in the "backyard" with a tasty slushy cocktail and delicious Sam Elliot sandwich. Vegan or vegetarian? They have you covered. We suggest the vegan burger and fried buffalo cauliflower (Seriously though, we aren't vegan and get them every time because they are THAT good!). 20% of all proceeds from carry-out order from 11am - 12pm will benefit the humane society. Check out their full menu here! Also, don't miss the Humane Society's Fall in Love Adoption Event on October 10th! All pet fees will be 10% off. I mean, you could always use another dog, right? Washington State History Museum Re-Opening! With new hours and a few adjustments, you can now explore the Washington State History Museum again! Our beloved museum is now open Tuesday through Sunday from 10am – 5pm, with a special Senior time on Tuesday from 10am – Noon. Enjoy half-priced admission through October 23rd as only a portion of the museum will be open. Come check out the Great Hall of Washington along with a special pop-up exhibition Northwest Collage Society’s Suffrage Celebration Show. Masks will be required and a one-way path will be marked throughout the galleries. On October 24th, come explore the new installations, Votes for Women: 100 Years and Counting and Columbia and Cascade: A River and a Range . We are THRILLED to see this lovely piece of Tacoma running again and look forward to when History After Hours start up again! October 16th Drive-in Movie, Free Pumpkins, and MORE! Sadly, this year’s traditional Truck and Tractor event has been cancelled. But the City of Lakewood didn’t want to let us down! Instead, head down to Fort Steilacoom Park to enjoy some popcorn, a free pumpkin (and decorating kit!), and a drive-in showing of the Academy Award winning film CoCo! Additionally, in leu of the traditional trucks and tractors, fire trucks and police vehicles will be at the event for kids and adults to view! All tickets must be purchased in advance as space is limited and there are a few rules to follow regarding parking and Covid safety. This is such a sweet way to get the family out, while staying cozy as fall sets in. If you get into town early, make sure to stop in at the Lakewood Farmers Market taking pace in the park from 2:30 to 6:30. Sounds like a whole evening of fun! Tacoma Arts Month October is a very special month in Tacoma. It's when we embrace, create, and further our understanding of the importance of art. With over 70 virtual events, including story telling, dance performances, art installations, fashion shows, concerts, and radio dramas, it's really too much to put in a tiny blog blurb. Perhaps the biggest take away from this will be watching and participating in the Tacoma Community engaging itself. These events, exhibits, and activities are part of what makes our city beautiful and inspire future Tacoma artists to grow and learn. P.S. TAM is open again! October 17th The Muse Hour with Karamo Brown If you’re like us, you’ve been known to binge a show or two on Netflix. The recent reboot of Queer Eye is certainly no exception! On October 17th, Tacoma Arts Live is hosting a live virtual conversation with Queer Eye Culture Expert, Karamo Brown. While the rest of the Queer Eye guys may be responsible for home, fashion, and beauty make-overs, Karamo reaches deeper to help participants overcome struggles holding them back internally and externally. Come hear from the 2018 Human Right Campaign Visibility Award winner as he draws from his social work background as well as his multiple identities as a black male, openly gay man, son of immigrants, Christian, and father. Following the event will be a moderated Q & A with audience members. Purchase tickets in advance here! New to 6th Ave Field Bar Tacoma There’s a new libation station on 6th Ave and they are making the best out of these Corona times. Located between Oakes and Anderson, Field Bar & Bottle Shop is ready to serve your wine, beer, cider, and classy cocktail needs. Specializing in natural libations, you’ll find the options are nearly endless. If you fancy yourself a darn good home bartender, you may consider checking out their bitters, vermouth, and aperitif selection. Or, if you prefer just to just pop a bottle (or can) their local beer and wine assortment cover’s a vast array for varietals, hops, and brews. Currently set up as a bottle shop only, you can come peruse the shelves for some take-home treats. When Phase 4 hits though, you’ll be able to cozy up in the shop to enjoy a vino or two. Check out their shop online today! Off Day Beer & Wine Several of us experienced a bit of mourning when North End Social club closed down earlier this year. But when one door closes on 6th Ave... it typically re-opens with a similar vibe. That's where Off Day Beer & Wine steps in! This "juice" bar for grown-ups offers local beers on tap and in cans, craft wine, and the ever growing in popularity, hard-seltzers. Couple owned, this taproom was born out of a passion for brewing, enjoying, and understanding beer. The owners have carefully crafted their menu and are very open to hearing what YOU would like to see on tap. Seriously! We've had the opportunity to chat with them a few time and they're true beer people with a desire to discover more. So make this a destination when you're out for a brisk fall walk, but be sure to come thirsty. Also, you'll find a few snacks available at the bar top but outside food is welcome! Trick or Treat! We understand that this year’s Halloween will be a bit different, especially for our little ones. Trick-or-treating one of those memories that you hold onto as a kiddo and hopefully get to share with your own little ones eventually. So we've found a few opportunities to safely acquire some treats before and on Halloween! October 9th Freight House Square: Trick-or-Treat Retail Market! Tacoma’s famous Freighthouse Marketplace is hosting a Covid safe market complete with local vendors, food court, and trick-or-treating. Explore the historical Freighthouse Square with your costumed kiddos and grab a treat for yourself along the way. Limited occupancy will be allowed, so be sure to come early or be prepared to wait outside for a short time. As always, mask or some form of face-covering are required as well as 6ft distancing. October 24th LeMay Trunk or Treat This spooky drive through event is a great way to snag some sweet treats at a safe distance! Pack up the kids and follow the sinister route of eerie and silly trunk displays through LeMay’s Marymount grounds. Once you’ve made it through the creepy crawlies, each costumed kiddo will receive a goody bag full of confectionary treasures. Even the first 250 drivers will receive a swag bag of their own! While the event is free, it’s suggested to reserve a time and spot in line to ensure there are enough treats to go around. October 31st Lincoln District Trick or Treating Businesses all along the Lincoln International Business District are ready with 6ft poles and bundles of candy to help make this 2020 Halloween a little sweeter. Get the kid’s dressed up in their finest Paw Patrol, Bat Girl, or Power Ranger get-ups and head down to the Lincoln District any time between 12pm and 5pm for some proper trick-or-treating. A large portion of funding for these projects comes from the seaport's yearly Chowder Social event but due to the mandated closure of the Museum, the normally lively event is being kicked to the curb. In a good way! Sign up, and swing by the seaport on the 20th for a curbside no-contact pick-up of famous local chowders, hors d’oevres, and desserts.
